Melbourne beat-maker Deer, née Tom Hitchcock, is perhaps the most pronounced example of a quiet achiever on the current Australian electronic music landscape.
Early forays into production saw release on enviably hip labels from Perth’s Pilerats through to NYC’s Mishka off the back of fortuitously timed collaborations with rising stars such as UV boi فوق بنفسجي and remix prowess such as his take on MssingNo’s single ‘XE2’, which featured in the majority of RL Grime’s 2015 live sets. Consolidated buzz in quality corners of the electronic community gave way to coveted support slots for the likes of Ryan Hemsworth, Shlohmo and Alison Wonderland to name just a few.
Deer’s output has always exhibited a sophistication that defines him from his compatriots, straddling the intersection of bass, pop, club and more on the frontier of contemporary electronic production.
Embracing a single by single approach, Deer has maintained a consistent sonic development.
Since 2015, Deer has released several originals including his debut original single ‘Cry For Help’.
"Bending sugary melodic flourish with deep, deep bass, Melbourne producer-on-the-rise Deer has crafted a killer treat.” -Thump
Following on Deer revealed his downtempo, immersive track ‘All Alone’ featuring vocals by cult Melbourne artist Martin King (Oscar & Martin, The Harpoons).
“A mashing of pop nuances intertwined with flecks of flute, the low tempo and highly emotional ‘All Alone’ is bound to find you in your loneliest hour.” - Stoney Roads
Last year saw Deer drop Nightfall as part of the Sidechains Compilation Series.
“Deer’s Nightfall, plays with trap influences for an invigorating, blissful number” - Pilerats
He also joined Kaytranada and Stwo on their Australian tour, DJing for Australian electronic pop talent Maribelle, releasing a remix of her Penthouse Penthouse collaboration ‘About You’.
“A rework that takes the sultry track straight to the club, injecting his characteristic production style to the R&B tune” - Acclaim Magazine
In 2017, Deer returns with Patience, a hard-hitting love song with heavy bass, sparkling synthesizers and a colourfully abrasive mix of vocals
With a slate of upcoming electronic, pop driven singles inspired by the likes of Cashmere Cat and Hudson Mohawke. Deer's new direction will solidify himself as a songwriter and vocalist adding to his already prolific production career.
